we had arrived in San Pedro...
and were on our way to a free educational experience in them thar hills...

We've been to the Marine Mammal Research Center in Marin as well as a similar center in Laguna Canyon (which I never posted on). These types of centers are usually free and offer a glimpse at how the city takes care of injured and sick marine mammals before releasing them to the wild.

There were a lot of educational posters and during the time of our visit, a guide was giving a mini tour to a small group of school children. The same guide later greeted us and answered questions that we had about the various types of seals here.

There are separate holding areas for the seals and sea lions. There was also a tarp covering the whole area to prevent seagulls from stealing their food, especially during feeding time, when the seals are given fish. The guide, a San Pedro local, told us that a "very friendly hawk" sometimes comes in to scare away the seagulls!

At times, the animals were pretty loud; we even saw some seals play fighting and barking at each other.

Our guide was excellent and so very knowledgeable.

There was an educational center detailing the history of the center along with a very small gift shop in the back. I liked that there were some hands on activities for kids and even a short video to watch.

Here's a a more up close look at the "inhabitants":

Nearby at Angel's Gate Park was our next destination which was considered a "must see/must visit" in San Pedro...
