Khanya Ramen & Izakaya

Not too long ago, a new ramen place popped up in East Chula Vista...

It is located in the Eastlake Design District...

Bert and I went here twice in one day...

Our first visit was prior to our 25th reunion which was nearby. We got a few appetizers here before heading to our reunion where we planned to have a few drinks. We chose to sit by the front windows instead of inside the restaurant. Servers and workers were mostly young.  The place wasn't crowded during the time of our visit (early dinner hour).

I liked these rattan lamp shades. Very 70's, island vibe.

Menu:

Our appetizers included calamari:

This was pretty good.  I liked the breading and the tender squid.

Followed by the pork belly skewer which we really enjoyed (I could have eaten more of these actually).

Bert chose the Bone in short rib - kind of pricey for the amount of meat.  It wasn't overly fatty but it had a good grilled flavor.

We later stopped by after our reunion with Tatonka. He ordered the gyoza, which were pretty standard (filling was beef).

We tried our server's favorite appetizer, the Bacon wrapped tomatoes. These were good but you have to be careful when biting the tomato because it's super hot.  Anything wrapped in bacon is good in my book.

Bert and I shared the premium Khanya ramen while Tatonka got the spicy ramen. While the noodles and toppings were good, both of the bowls' broth were not as hot as it should have been. In fact, it was lukewarm. We were surmising that because it was pretty late (11:30 pm), they may have turned off their burners or something.  Lukewarm ramen = sucky.

The workers also started putting up chairs around 11:45 (they closed at midnight)...we got the hint and left. Their women's bathroom, after having been open for more than a month already, had NO MIRROR. WTF man. Really? The men's bathroom didn't either. I did ask about that and was told that they would be putting one in soon. Seriously, no mirror in the bathroom.

There is no website but here are the mix bag o' reviews from yelp

The place may look nice and new but if your signature food item, the ramen, is subpar, then that just plain sucks. That being said, TC still wants to try this place and maybe a return visit may occur in the distant future, perhaps when it's not closing time.
