Feeling the urge to buy fresh fruits, TC and I went to the Chula Vista Farmer's Market today. It was a race for time because we left at 5 pm. Her piano lesson was supposed to start at 6:45, but sometimes her teacher comes early. We had to get home by 6 to be on the safe side so she could also eat a bit of dinner beforehand. So I hauled ass over to downtown CV and snapped a prime parking spot on 3rd as a car was pulling out. There was still 1 hour left on his meter!!! Although I did not bring my camera to the market, I ended up taking these photos at home. Here are the sambussas on our good wedding china that-we-hardly-ever-use-but-we-should...
The sambussas were from a booth with a black banner with red lettering - "Red East African". This was new (the banner). Last time I went last month, they weren't there. They used to be at the Eastlake and Southwestern College Farmer's Markets before they shut down due to lack of vendors (or interest?). The young man manning the booth was quite patient as an elderly lady was before me and she was fumbling for her cash. After she left, she came back one minute later because she forgot her cane which she hooked onto their booth's edge.
Sambussas hail from East Africa (Ethiopa, Eritrea) and are similar to the Indian samosa. These tasty fried morsels were triangular in shape with phyllo like dough encasing a variety of savory ingredients. The price was as it has always been , $5 for 6 pieces. The flavors: beef, chicken, spinach, potato, coconut (I didn't try that), and lentil. I got 12 pieces (3 each in 4 flavors - so TC, Bert & I would each have one of chicken, spinach, potato & beef). They all had a bit of spice to it, even the potato, much to TC's chagrin. Yet, she still ate it! The trooper!
The chicken filling...you can see the red pepper flecks:
The spinach:
$1 for 1 bunch of arugula:
2 bunches of asparagus for $4:

These asparagus spears were superthin. I snapped off the ends and microwaved them in the oven for 2 minutes. I made two batches, 1 microwaved plain and the other finished off (after being nuked) with a pat of butter and blood orange juice.
1 bunch of radish, $1

I was about to buy a trio of these Carlsbad strawberries for $4, but instead, bought the 3 for $7 instead because the berries were larger and glossier. These were the same berries I bought last time (but I only bought 1 basket). The Japanese farmer I spoke to recommended them highly and said not to waste these strawberries for smoothies. He said to eat this as they were! These. Are. So. Good.

I love the potato sambussas! They are fairly spice, though. Did you see the asian farmer there? I didn't see him last time, but he was really nice.
Did you eat the strawberries fresh or make dessert?
Lotus
Actually I bought the strawberries from the Asian farmer (I believe he may be Japanese?) He is really nice and very honest!
The rest of the vegetables I bought from Latino farmers which was cool because I had the chance to practice my Spanish.
Sambussas are so good!
ahh, I thought he might be korean, he's pretty big. Either way, I'm glad he's back. I need to get back to the farmers market. I've been shopping at the coop in PB but they don't sell meat :(
