Did errands for the past few days. Sad event. My father in law passed away last week. Services are tomorrow. Last night and this night was the viewing. Tonight was a rosary and it was really nice to hear many of his friends share their fond memories of him. He was such a good family man; he enjoyed making corny jokes (at least to me) and enjoyed laughing and being with his grandkids. He also had a cool wardrobe. One of my favorite ensembles was a white and navy blue polyester Aloha shirt which he would sometimes wear with plaid pants and snakeskin boots.
Bert also found it amusing that his dad would wear white tube socks with dress shoes. One year, he or one of his siblings bought him black dress socks but I think he probably preferred his tube socks.
I remember once accompanying my mom for grocery shopping at her former workplace, the Naval commissary, and as I stood there, she chattered away in Tagalog about me to her friends. "This is my oldest"...."She's married....", "She has a daughter"..."She works at...".
I caught bits and pieces of the conversation and smiled and nodded when I didn't understand. They were all very nice ladies. I was in the breakroom while my mom was out finishing her shopping and a lot of these older Filipino women (many of them cashiers, like her; some were baggers) would say she made the best food for potlucks or that she was one of the friendliest cashiers. I didn't think they would be making this up just to impress me. It was kind of neat but wierd because I felt like I was looking into a window. I guess I only see my mom a certain way. I got to see another side of her that day through other people. That's how I felt when I listened to my father in law's friends speak about him. We will miss him very much, especially TC.
So, it's late again as I type this...Bert is at his parents' house helping to do last minute tidying up before tomorrow's reception.
On a different note, I was web surfing some other blogs...turns out American Idol had the remaning four singers do Elvis...Since we didn't tape it, I can't form an opionion. Most bloggers seemed to prefer Bert's favorite, Elliott (aka Mr. Tumnus or Goatboy). We'll see tomorrow night when they boot another person off.
