we were back on Figueroa Street...

It was time for some coffee and hopefully some pastries at a coffee shop Cathy and I visited earlier that summer...
You can see the famous Chicken Boy Statue across the street from Kindness & Mischief Coffee.

I like how the old signs are still up there.
It was still pretty early (around 8:15'ish) and the morning light looked really cool against the wall.

The barista was a really nice guy. Before he left, he was arranging coffee beans in a pattern, which he later posted on Instagram. Bert and I admired the mirrored herringbone pattern on their counter.

Menu is short and simple.

This time we would try their pastries, which incidentally are Filipino inspired. They hail from bakery, Creme Caramel LA whose owwner and chef Kristine de la Cruz is Filipina American (more about Creme Caramel here)

Bert ordered the butterbeer latte for himself and the matcha for TC (which she ended giving to us since it was too strong for her). Believe it or not, I didn't have coffee this particular morning. It was due to my self imposed rule of not having caffeine on Sundays. I may have had a few sips of Bert's coffee but wasn't really into it since it tasted like a melted butterscotch candy.

Matcha and Butterbeer latte:

I guess she thought she could handle the matcha, but it was really quite strong.
Below, ube and coconut biscuit, ensaymada scone and calamansi hand pies:

The fluffy grated stuff on top that looks like coconut is not; it is cheese (which is traditional for ensaymada). The scone was a bit on the harder side as well. I liked the calamansi hand pie the best. The flaky pastry and tart filling was quite good. The WORST was the ube biscuit. This was really dense. Biting into this was unpleasant. The biscuit itself was chewy and hard; there were actual chunks of ube inside which were also hard. I do like texture, but this biscuit wasn't a great combination of flavors in my opinion and I normally like ube anything. Insert sad face here.

Cool lacquered blue edges.

Brick wall with plaques from supporters and sponsors.

I was disappointed by the pastries. The flavor/fusion of these were good but fell short of my expectations.

Down the street and around the corner was our last stop of the morning before making the drive back down to San Diego...

The pastries LOOK good anyhow. I'd try a sip of each of those beverages. That was a fun trip last summer.
Sadly, while they looked good, they did not deliver in terms of taste and texture. :(
We need to do another road trip! Hint!
