(as seen from the 94, heading west)
we made our way across to the 94 to get to the 805....
I had punched in the wrong destination on googlemaps; it was also in Point Loma, so we took the roundabout way to Liberty Station where we decided to spend some time walking around before having coffee #2.
I love the name of this taco place near West Point Loma Blvd.

Over on Rosecrans was the historic Loma Theater, now home to Barnes & Noble Books (since the early 90's)

The Loma Theater is where I first watched Disney's "Pinocchio" in kindergarten. That was a pretty freaky movie, especially when he was swallowed by Monstro, the whale.
Yes, the stuff of nightmares:
I wanted us to check out the coffee place first before going to Liberty Station. In doing so, we passed by a refurbished mid-century hotel/restaurant where I had my birthday dinner back in 2012

I loved the look of the morning light.
Sabatini's liquor store/deli has been here FOREVER.

Now THIS was nice to see. An empty parking lot. But then, most places are pretty empty this early in the morning. It was only 7:30'ish. This is the lot next to Stone Brewery and Gardens and the Liberty Station back entrance. Barracks 15 also houses the Womens Museum . The yellow sign proclaimed, "Grand Opening" of Comickaze, a store that sells books and comics/graphic novels.

Too bad they were not open (not 'til 11 am). We will have to come back next time.
We peered through their windows and saw a t-shirt of Edward Scissorhands in the style of Patrick Nagel, who was former Playboy illustrator. One of his best known works is the Duran Duran "Rio" album cover. I thought this was a brilliant depiction and a nice homage to Nagel.

You can check out this design better on Teepublic, the t-shirt designer's website here and more about the illustrator Patrick Nagel here. Although Nagel died 33 years ago, his stylized body of work is quite iconic and very very 80's (in a good way).
Duran Duran's "Rio" (1982) is one of my favorite albums:
My favorite song is "Last Chance on the Stairway", a song that was never played on the radio (it clocks in at the 27:22 mark)
You can sometimes see "beauty shop Nagels" at various hair/beauty salons.
Seriously, just look at any beauty salon/nail shop and you around bound to find similar images/poses.
Another t-shirt designed featured one of our favorite comic characters, the Tick, which was recently booted as a series on Amazon Prime. We have yet to watch it but are big fans of the original animated series from 1994 (the live action reboot from 2001 wasn't that great though).

We loved this show!
I have a notion of rewatching the original series again! I do have the boxed set!
During our walk, we saw rows of memorial markers flanking walkings at Liberty Station NTC Park. There are supposed to be 52 , named for the "52 Boats Memorial" dedicated to the submarines that were lost in WWII. Recently in the news, there were reports of the markers being vandalized over the years. The sponsoring organization replaced them but is running out of funds since more and more markers are being defaced or even stolen right out of the foundation. So sad that people would even do this.

Here is a recent story about vandalism that occurred just last month. We even saw that some markers were missing (they were roped off with yellow tape):
"War memorials being vandalized at Liberty Station" KUSI, Dec 7, 2016 (includes a video)
Ingram Plaza - This is the open area near Barracks 15. A tall flagpole stands in the middle.

The plaque on the rock reads,
"INGRAM PLAZA - This plaza is dedicated to the memory of Osmond K. Ingram
Gunner's Mate First Class, United States Mavy
who sacrificed his life in an effort to save his ship and shipmates during an engagement between the U.S.S. Cassin and a German submarine on October 15, 1917"
Another nearby plaque looked a bit weathered (with some words missing). I found it quite amusing that there were obvious mispellings in there. Did the people making this plaque not catch this? Obviously not.

Chicken pocks. Measels.
Yeah, good one there.
Before heading over to the second coffee place, we stopped by Con Pane to buy a couple of pastries to bring with us. It was a weekend so I knew they would have their mini chocolate buns.

Bert selected one dark chocolate orange pecan scone (it was excellent) to go with the chocolate bread.

The scone was a decent size and chock full of pecans and dark chocolate chunks. Yes, chunks, not chips. It had a nice crust and was not too crumbly or dense. This was one of the better scones we've had.

Previous visit to Liberty Station:
January 2017 when I went to Moniker Coffee last week and the $#%& barista asked if I knew that my macchiato would be SMALL. WTF man.
Previous visit to Con Pane
May 2013
It was time for coffee #2 which would not be here and it certainly wouldn't be aat Moniker again. Off to the Roseville neighborhood to the site of the former Ballast Pub...
