Ube Dalgona Coffee

Now that I have your attention...

This purple candy dispenser only shares one thing with this post's subject...

which is the PRINCELY PURPLE COLOR of the UBE milk, achieved by using ube extract. The extract below is the McCormick brand, but BEWARE. Any extract bought after September 2019 has a different formula. Instead of being laden with red and blue dyes, it is CLEAR, which to me, defeats the purpose of having a purple ube extract.  How do I know this shit?  Because I bought four of thesse extract earlier in 2019.  Then when I tried looking for them again at the end of 2019, they were all gone. Also, I checked online through Amazon and saw all of the negative reviews from folks who were disappointed to get something different than what was pictured on the site. Because I was an ube extract hoarder, I still had some of the original purple version and didn't pay more for the clear version.

Dalgona Coffee originated from South Korea a few years ago. It is pretty easy to make. Photos of this coffee (not with ube milk) went viral during the spring. People were bored at home and made this coffee concoction.  It is easy. You need 2 tbps each of  instant coffee, boiling water and sugar. You will also need milk of your choice (real or substitute, whatever you like).

Directions - combine the water and the instant coffee (I leveled up for muy 2nd attempt, thanks to blogger @limereats (he used to be the PinoyPanda) and used espresso powder instead of the shitty Folgers.    Dump the first three ingredients and whip with an electric mixer until everything is incorporated and whipped up until soft peaks form . This should take about five minutes.  For the milk, I added several drops of ube extract and mixed it.

Dollop over the milk of your choice. I used a mix of oat and almond (next time, I won't use the oat since it is too "brown" and makes for a muddier color when adding the ube extract). I also made mine iced. Me no like hot drinks.

Also, serve in a clear glass so you can see them layers. Otherwise, why bother.

I should have put more milk so that the coffee fluff would extend over the the rim.

You can mix it up if you want.  The coffee fluff is pretty damn strong.  Not in a good way. Mixing it should soften up the flavor.

Here was my 2nd attempt, this time using espresso powder. I also changed up the milks 0 coconut and almond. Same instructions as before.

I used a different glass and still didn't put as much milk. The coffee fluff wasn't as whipped as my first attempt so it is a little flat.

I like seeing those layers.

Looks nice and tasted better than the Folgers. Mixing it makes the purple dissipate but it still tastes good - that ube mixed with the coffee...

Who else made it?

Other folks have made other versions using matcha, pandan, halo halo (no espresso though). The possibilities are endless.
