Maui Day 1 - First stop, Costco

Last week we went on a much needed vacation...

We hadn't been to the airport since our Portland trip last year and I don't remember the new sitting areas complete with outlets in the tables (nice!);

This year, we would be off to Maui for about a week...

The flight was uneventful, which was a good thing. They did however, give us a lot of food as in 1 breakfast sandwich plus a small coconut pineapple granola bite. They gave a small bag of cracker snacks as well as beverages. Shortly before landing, they offered a complimentary pineapple/guava rum beverage (yes please).

As we stepped out of the airport and into the the lines to get to the rental car, we felt how hot and humid it was. I wore jeans on the plane but made sure to change to shorts and flip flops  so I wouldn't feel the heat and humidity as much.

We were able to get our rental easily. Since we couldn't check in to our condo rental until 3 pm, we made sure to make the first stop at a place that we were recommended to visit.

This place was Costco where we would buy our provisions (water, bread, eggs, fruit, and salad, and some snacks).  My friends told me that the Costco in Maui had a lot of products only found in their stores and I had a great time looking at many of these specialized products.

As tempting as the poke was, we didn't have a cooler with us and didn't want it to spoil in the car.  We would end up getting poke at other places later that week.  But look at those prices!

We bought one of the Maui Gold pineapples. This was one of the most sweetest and most fragrant pineapples we've ever tasted. Makes me wish that we bought two instead of one.

There were so many Hawaiian made products that fascinated me, but I couldn't snap pics of all of them. Here instead, are just a few that I was intrigued by.  These lilikoi (passionfruit) biscuits were pretty nice - crisp and fruity.

We also enjoyed these snacks - the honey furikake puffs. Furikake is a popular seasoning here. You see it on top of rice, on poke, and on snacks like popcorn and these puff things. This bag did not last long, I'll tell you that.

We did not get this, but I was curious since I'd never seen this before. "Ahu" is also known as the Skipjack tuna.  The pieces looked pretty meaty!

TC and I looked at this but refrained. She already had friends asking for her to get li hing flavored candies or dried fruit for them. We ended up getting bags of the powder at a local liquor store for cheap. We just didn't want a bigass bag!

More Hawaiian snacks - chips, candies (not pictured were the aisle of chocolate covered macadamia nut boxes)...

It was quite fun going through the aisles and seeing how different their products were. We didn't want to get too much stuff since it had to fit in the trunk without displacing our luggage. We were warned about the crime on Maui and didn't want to be victims of a car break in. I wanted to make sure all of our crap was out of sight in the trunk.

Because I did not think to check the hours of our original lunch destination, I was bummed to find out that the Geste Shrimp truck was CLOSED on Mondays. So...Plan B was put into action. It was a bit of a desperate decision because we just wanted to get something quick since we still wanted to stop by the local Walmart for a few other things...

I stop by Costco to get things for the folks at work CC.....I actually bought those furikake puffs back in January and the folks in the office loved them.

Those furikake puffs were so addicting! I like the flavor combination!

I was tempted to buy a separate luggage at Walmart so I could buy more food souvenirs! I did that for my Canada trip back in 2012. I was pretty restrained at Costco. Lots of good deals on local foods/candies but I just didn't want to deal with checking in luggage and or have a heavy carryon.
