Levis, QC, Quebec

After our awesome lunch at La Belle Province, we piled back into the minivan and headed to the city of Levis...

but not before trying one of TC's wierd Canadian candies, in this case, gummy and sour blue raspberry flavored Big Foot. She thought it was hilarious that the candy was shaped like a foot and that the toe was really huge. This candy made by the Allan Candy , a Canadian product, and comes in other colors and flavors. I could only take one piece since I'm not into the sour stuff...

We would be on the road for a few more hours...

...passing by miles and miles of open road as well as these curious sights (for us at least), conical buildings filled with salt which are used for the roads.

Meanwhile, we encountered lots of construction work...

and more sideways traffic lights...

Bert must have been driving since FJ was in the passenger seat. Those two were, as C jokingly mentioned, "like brothers from another mother"! Our husbands did a great job navigating and exchanging tidbits of info not just because they enjoyed each others' company, but also as a method to stay awake while on the road!

Below, a billboard extolling the virtues of Frozen Lemonade at Tim Horton's (aka "Timmy's), a refreshment we enjoyed many times during that trip (lemonade and raspberry flavor!)!

We finally got to C's blog friend's house. She was originally going to meet us somewhere but was waiting for her children to arrive from school. Interestingly, her four school aged children attend an English only school (the mother is not from Quebec but is married to a Frenchman from Quebec). This is the exception rather than the rule in Quebec. According to the educational system in Quebec, since one of the parents (in this case, the mom) received the majority of her studies in English in another part of Canada, and is a Canadian citizen, the children have the right to attend an English only school.  The children already speak French but going to an English only school will afford them other opportunities later in life (jobs, travel, university) rather than limiting them if they were only monolingual. More on the education system in Quebec here,

C's friend is very crafty and made that cool wreath you see above. She simply tied pinked strips of leftover fabric (with a sock monkey pattern) on a hanger she formed into a circle. Very clever!

We waited for her other children to arrive from school before braving the heat and making a short trek through a local park and through the main drag of Old Levis for ice cream.

The city of Levis is a city in eastern Quebec and lies directly across Quebec City which can be reached by a ferry that crosses the St. Lawrence River.

This was a really nice park with gorgeous panomoramic views of old Quebec (although you can't tell from this photo)...Update - Just looked it up and this park is called "Terrasse de Levis" (Terrace of Levis). It was inaugurated in 1938 by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. It serves as a park and observation terrace which overlooks Quebec City, the Chateau Frontenac (a fancy hotel), and the Laurentian mountains.

The visit to the park was quite short and we followed C's friend and her kids through the neighborhoods and up the hills...

I was excited by this restaurant sign which indicated that they sold SMOKED MEAT here!

Further up, the quaintly named, "L'Oeil du Dragon" ("eye of the dragon"), a sushi place!

And next to that was Restaurant Levina, a Vietnamese place...

I thought this sign was cute...a sign of things to come perhaps?

We were just a few steps away from the ice cream shop...
