Whenever I hear the word "mango", I don't think about that luscious tropical fruit.
Instead, this is what comes to mind (most of the time!)...
Chris Kattan as the infamous "Mango" from SNL:
For those of you that remember watching the whole episode, Garth Brooks was full of win that night, with "Who's More Grizzled" and "Celebrity Jeopardy". This one was pretty funny (but disturbing).
Well, this post is about another kind of mango as well. Something that we thought we'd try but ended up regretting...
Of course, thrift-minded me used a coupon from my new Entertainment value book. This was a "new" one that I hadn't seen before.
Mango is a Mexican ice cream/smoothie place which is located at the strip mall at the corner of Broadway and H. It's the same building that has Atlantis Laser Tag.
They had interesting flavors of ice cream like rose petal, mazapan (peanut based) and gansitas (the second is a flavor based on a chocolate covered and strawberr jelly filled Twinkie-like snack cake from Marinelas), along with traditional Mexican flavors like dulce de leche and tamarindo. They also had a small selection of paletas but the flavors weren't identifiable. For a larger selection of home-made paletas, I would highly suggest going to Oasis Ice Cream instead..
One of the main reasons for coming here was to get that gross red onion taste out of my mouth, which I had from our lunch earlier at Boll Weevil. When we got there, I was the second person in line. I thought, 'Hey, this'll be a quick one'...how wrong I was!
Let the rant begin.....now:
First off, the girl working the counter looked at the coupon like she'd never seen one before. She had to "ask about it" in a mysterious side room. She came out saying that I would have to wait for the manager because he never told them what to do with coupons. WTF. She said the manager would be there in half an hour! Double WTF. I patiently told her, well, it's a two for one coupon, so you would just need to ring me up for one item since I was going to buy two of the same item. She sighed and said, "I don't want to get in trouble, but I'll do it anyways"! Like it was a burden for her!
After my question, wouldn't you know it, she went back to the back room and came out with a cell phone to her ear. Maybe, calling the manager? She said that I would need to buy $6 to use the coupon. When I pointed out that the largest size of what I wanted was only $5 AND that the coupon said "UP to $6.00", she still tried to get me to spend $6 by suggesting I buy a bag of chips to make it $6. I politely told her, "No, I don't want chips. I just want the drinks".
By this time, the line started growing behind me. Another worker (an older lady) came out and started to help those customers while I was off to the side. The girl, who had again gone to the back room was going back and forth getting supplies. After what seemed like an eternity (twenty minutes), she finally came out with our drinks, which were Chamangos.
Come to think of it, I honest to God hope she didn't spit or do anything gross to our drinks while in that mysterious room where she prepared the Chamangos.
All that hassle to get a chamango because of a worker's lack of training and customer service. Seriously, their manager or boss or whatever needs to train these folks. This is not the first coupon they'll encounter, but OMFG, I felt like I should have walked away after ten minutes.
One drink came with the spicy tamarind candy covered stick. I didn't say "straw" because it wasn't hollow on the other end. That was their last one.
Aaargh - Rant over!
Now the important question..."Did it taste good?"
And the answer was "Yes". Not as good as Teresita's. This was a bit more "icy" and less intensely mango-flavored than Teresitas. There was also less Chamoy than both Teresita's and D'Volada's. There was also none of that spicy tamarind candy either, just on the wanna-be straw. It was more of a mango slushy with a bit of chamoy. Kind of like Chamango-lite, but still quite refreshing.
TC enjoyed her swhile Bert and I enjoyed ours over the next two days. We kept putting it in the freezer.
Anyways, I don't think I'll go there again, even if I had a coupon. So, chalk that up to a terrible experience and one that I wouldn't want to endure ever again even if there was a delicious Chamango drink as a reward.
